The slow pace of Costa Rica is part of the charm and intrigue but getting to this exciting destination in half the time is a huge bonus!

If you are flying in to SJO or just escaping your cubical or office in San Jose when you’re headed west to Los Sueños you’ll be hopping on the new San Jose-Caldera Highway.

On Wednesday, January 27th, President Oscar Arias officially declared the opening of the highway in an inaugural ceremony that millions of Costa Ricans and visitors alike had anticipated for so many years. No too long after the project was approved to move forward a surprise came announcing that the road would be open about 4 months ahead of schedule!

Following the inauguration, the President toured the city of Puntarenas on the Gulf of Nicoya  and remarked that he made it there in about 45 minutes and had never arrived there before in less than about 90 minutes.

The first modern highway in the country, keep in mind that the Caldera is a toll road and will initially cost around $2.80 or  1,930 Colones to cross from the Capital to Caldera.

Los Sueños Resort and Marina is a serene, sophisticated, luxury residential and resort development created right at the edge of rainforest, mountains and shoreline of the Central Pacific of Cost Rica in a small part of the world where nature still runs wild.

Earlier this month in a gathering at Los Suenos Resort and Marina interested benefactors met with the Playa Hermosa, Sanctuary Administrator, Sr. Belfort Cubillo to learn as much as possible about the plight of the sea turtles and the most immediate and long term needs of the sanctuary. Sr. Cubillo previously served as Administrator protecting and sharing the natural beauty of the Manuel Antonio National Park.

Sr. Cubillo now focuses his full attention on repairing and replacing the dilapidated facilities at Playa Hermosa and especially dedicates 7 days a week to saving the various breeds of turtles that instinctually choose this tiny, 10 km slice of Costa Rican coastline.

There is much more hope now for the survival of the 4 different breeds of turtles who annually return to Playa Hermosa (just a few minutes south of Playa Jaco in the province of Puntarenas bring together many concerned citizens and professionals

A dedicated local group is now spearheading a campaign to assist in every way possible to ensure the long-term survival of these amazing, endangered creatures.

The group has solidified an official alliance with the sanctuary that they hope will help bring volunteers from many corners of the globe to encourage attention from the scientific and worldwide media communities, global environmentalists and contributions from local community members and construction professionals.

They will put out a Call to Action and ask volunteer forces to help patrol the beaches for nests, protect them from poachers, care for the incubating eggs and help provide funding for much needed supplies which are vitally necessary in order to rescue, incubate and release the hatchlings back into their natural environment of the sea.

Adults and families with children visiting the area will now have the ability and the privilege of volunteering their time.

Out of a total of 8 breeds of sea turtles in the world, 6 migrate to Costa Rica and an astonishing 4 breeds choose Playa Hermosa. December through March is breeding and egg laying season for the Negra del Pacifico turtles who migrate to Playa Hermosa. So, instead of more shopping, wrapping  and fighting the rain and snow choose a : “Go-Green Christmas” in one of the greenest places on earth.

This Holiday Season, Volunteer families and friends can share their time together doing something different… something wonderful…something truly giving this year, and enjoy the experience of a lifetime!

What most of us don’t see every day are the struggles of some endangered species who choose Costa Rica as one the few places on earth perfect enough to mate and hatch their young.

Predators, both wild animals and humans even further endanger these few remaining turtles….there are very few natural threats in the sea….most of the danger for the turtles in the sea comes from getting caught in nets or being killed on purpose and sold for a hefty profit.

Many hatchlings never make it from the nest to the sea to grow and thrive….Poachers steal and sell the eggs. A few wild animals like Raccoons and Pizotes  steal the eggs and the hatchlings. Poachers kill both baby hatchlings and adults for their shells….Between lost eggs, hatchlings who do no make it to the sea, man-made dangers and other preditors in the sea…for some breeds, only about 1 in 100,000 survive to adulthood!

The “poaching”, or stealing of these eggs, hatchlings and adults turtles is a national crime, however, there is only a very small fine that thieves gladly pay…..that cost is much less than the profits they will make.
But, the cost to the turtles means everything including a very serious threat of extiction!

Those who step up to the challenge of volunteering may be asking themselves “How can I help? How can I say “no” to helping those baby sea turtles and their families…especially during the holidays?”

By volunteering your time and efforts to the Refugio Nacional Playa Hermosa this holiday season or during any sea turtle egg laying season throughout the year, you will be doing your part to help protect the planet and it’s  creatures from extinction, help a sea turtle family to survive and form holiday memories that will last a lifetime!

Baby turtlesNow, with your help, the Baula (Leatherbacks, the Negra del Pacificos, the Tortugas Carey and the Carpenteras will all be on earth a little longer and a little stronger, in greater numbers.

We challenge you to get back to the real roots, of the spirit of Christmas. This year, promote family togetherness; for your family and the turtle families of the sea.

Ready to escort baby leatherback turtles into the ocean

Ready to escort baby leatherback turtles into the ocean

Come to Costa Rica this holiday season where “going green” is more than the latest trend…it’s our way of life!

With a tremendous average annual rainfall, we’ve been green almost since the dawn of time.

Each holiday season there are new toys, gadgets and warm things to wear that are on wish lists everywhere. There are

numerous frantic shopping days and over-spending to find just the right gift for each family member.…only to find those

very items too small, broken, on the closet shelf, techno-obsolete or at the family garage sale next Spring.

This year, start a new holiday tradition!

Families everywhere are recycling, saving a tree or two where they can, using less fuel, conserving water and remodeling

their homes with materials derived from renewable resources.  You are working hard to save the planet….Come to

Costa Rica and live the thrills, excitement and adventures of one of the richest places on earth!

Experience prehistoric volcanoes, the wonders of the rain forest or become  “Hands-on Volunteers” helping to protect

and save baby sea turtles…assisting them to arrive safely into the ocean allowing them to grow and thrive!

This is no simulation, not a zoo, a wild animal park or exhibit; it’s not even a “Café” with exotic décor and a Rainforest

theme. It’s all real, all pure, all the time!

Family travel is best enjoyed when everyone is together and when the accommodations are spacious and comfortable.

Much like home, a luxury vacation rental can provide a home environment accommodating up to 6 people. You can reap

the benefits of comfort and space while having the most access to the best that Costa Rica has to offer.

The wildlife thrives in the green foliage and tropical climate of Costa Rica.  So imagine the looks on your kid’s faces when

they see monkeys, iguanas or exotic birds right outside your door with their own eyes!

Protection of the environment and its wildlife is highly important to the country and its citizens.  This magical place of

amazing tropical foliage, mountains and valleys with many different climates all sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean

and Caribbean Sea with all its wonders is just waiting for you to explore.

Zig Zag from tree to tree and fly through a cloud with a breathtaking view of Herradura Bay on Zip Lines under the

canopy of the rainforest one day… then ride on horseback climbing into the foothills, across a creek to an amazing

waterfall the next.

Can you imagine starting your morning with a view of the slopes of jungle covered mountains splashing into the sea on the

Pacific Coast  then watching the lava flow as it illuminates the night sky from the slopes of the perfect Volcanic cone called

Arenal all in the same day?

Many of the adventures you may choose may begin only a few minutes away from the comfort, luxury and convenience of

your home base.

Tomorrow you may then be enjoying the white sand and turquoise waters of the pleasures of the Caribbean before

returning to your base on the Central Pacific coast.

A family vacation brings people together to rejuvenate, relax, play and become reacquainted.  Enjoying life with those

they love the most while temporarily leaving the rest of the world behind.

All Costa Rica is now very easily accessible from most U.S. and Canadian gateways, all available at your fingertips.

You’ll all enjoy so much for so little…it’s an incredible family value!…and we all like that!

So, eliminate the shopping, forget the hectic trips to the mall in the rain and snow. There’ll be no need for parking or the

endless hours of catalogue shopping. You may even save a tree from becoming just another roll of Santa covered

wrapping paper.

This season, wrap up the gift of togetherness on your first trip to a genuine paradise and you can also feel great about

doing your part for the planet!

It may be hard to imagine but it’s all right here in Costa Rica…with “No Artificial Ingredients” as they say.

Truly, “Go Green” in Costa Rica… this Holiday Season…turning those family dreams into lifetime memories.

Now it’s easier than ever to Live PuraVida (the Pure Life) together!

picture-265Costa Rica is a perfect destination for a family vacation.  It is a wonderland of natural resources and ecological wonders.  If you are thinking of planning a vacation there, it is a good idea to research ahead of time for the most age appropriate activates for your children.

As well as a holiday, your children will learn so much about another culture, climate and environment.  Costa Ricans are very family-oriented and welcome families and children with open arms.  From separate walks on guided tours, to graded adventure activities that help you personalize your family adventure, the local people work hard to help all families have a memorable stay.

Here are some highlights of a Costa Rica vacation for families.  Do a little further research on each one to help you decide what adventures your family would most like to enjoy.  You will most likely be staying at a resort such as Los Sueños Marina and Golf Resort, where they will help you to book guided tours and activities that are safe and family friendly.

Wildlife tours are probably the first adventures you’ll want to explore.  Costa Rica offers close up encounters with white faced monkeys, crocodiles, iguanas and even butterflies.

The canopy of the rain forest is magnificent and children and adults alike will never forget the experience of crossing hanging bridges and looking down on the jungle from such a lush vantage point.

Many area resorts and tour companies will often arrange visits to local schools where you and your family can have lunch and interact with local school children.  The children of Costa Rica love this opportunity to practice their English skills and you get a close up look at real life situations and its people.

One of the most famous activities to do in Costa Rica is a volcano tour.  These are exciting and not at all dangerous.  The tours again, are designed at different levels and lengths to suit all ages.

Waterfall tours are numerous throughout the area and provide excellent opportunities to explore the flora and fauna close up and personal.  You’ll see brightly colored birds, frogs, bats and clever spiders that actually weave twigs into their webs to attract and catch prey in the trees.  There is even a tree named a kerosene tree that has sap which can actually ignite when scraped from the tree.

Other tours available include butterfly gardens and pineapple plantations. If you have discovered a trip in your preplanning research, be sure to ask at your resort if this is something they can arrange.

Be sure not to overlook a simple family day at the beach.  Costa Rica is also famous for its beautiful beaches for swimming and soaking in the sun!  If your kids are a little older, or maybe even if you’re feeling adventurous yourself, Boogie-boarding and surfing are also a lot of fun to try.

Most of all relax and have fun on your family vacation in Costa Rica.  Take lots of pictures and encourage the kids to keep a journal for post-trip enjoyment!

If you are planning a holiday with your family and want to stay at a resort, you want to be sure it is family friendly.  There are plenty of resorts in Costa Rica that are family friendly, but unless you know what questions to ask, you can’t be sure it will have what you are looking for.  Here is a short guide to the things to look for in a family friendly resort:

1.       Is there an activity program dedicated totally to the children?  If so, what ages does it cater to, and what type of activities are offered?  You’ll also want to know the qualifications of the personnel running the program.  Ask about the costs for the program if you think you will want your children to participate, as this will help you factor these activities into your vacation budget. If you plan to include some adult outings, does the resort have an affordable reliable and in-room babysitting service?  Ask for details about the providers and their experience.

2.       Next, you will want to look at the resort itself.  Does it have amenities that will be enjoyed by the whole family?  Things your family can do onsite such as mini golf or paddle boats can be fun, and don’t forget to ask about a child friendly pool and outdoor playground.  Are there movie or video game rentals available?  Try to think of things your children will want to do at the resort between outings.

3.       Be certain to find out what restaurants are on site.  Are they family friendly and do they offer child sized portions as well as child sized prices?

4.       Check the resort’s website or brochure for photos of the units so you can be sure you will have enough room for sleeping, eating and playing.  A kitchen or kitchenette is invaluable for breakfasts before heading out for the day or for cooking your own meals if you’re trying to save money.  Another family perk is ensuite laundry facilities.  This can be a lifesaver, especially with young children.  While doing laundry when you’re on vacation doesn’t sound like fun, it can mean that you’ll be able to pack a lot fewer items and at the very least, you can pack clean clothes for the trip home.

5.       One other item that we don’t like to think about, but we must, is the proximity of a medical treatment center or hospital.  Accidents and illness do happen even on vacation, and it is always best to know where help can be found quickly.

By searching out the answers to these few things, you are sure to have a much happier, more satisfying family holiday.

One of the greatest adventures of any family vacation is trying out the food of the region.  Educating yourself a bit before travelling will help make this part of the visit something to plan for and look forward to.  If your children are older, you could consider borrowing some cookbooks from your local library and actually cooking up some authentic food of your destination.  That way, when you eat the real thing, you can compare your culinary skills to those of the locals.

Like most countries, the food in Costa Rica is influenced by several cultures. European, South American and even some African influences can be found depending on the region to which you are travelling.

Food and dining is an important part of the social make up of Costa Rica.  It is considered an important time to meet and chat with family and friends.  Perhaps this explains why appetizers play a very important role at every meal and are often provided free with meals.  Some of the most common appetizers include salads, often made with seafood or beans, empanadas and tamales.  Salads are served with most meals and are generally made of cabbage, tomatoes, peppers and onions dressed with lemon juice and herbs.

Beans, particularly kidney beans are a favourite among Costa Ricans and are included in many of the salads, soups and main dishes of the region.  They are often combined with rice, beef and chicken to create very hearty and healthy dishes.  If your family enjoys stews and pots of thick nourishing chilli, they will most likely enjoy these dishes of Costa Rica.  Some of the most common soups include cod soup, bean soup, meatball soup and tortilla soup.

One of the most interesting foods to enjoy in Costa Rica is Yucca.  It is used there much like potatoes are used here.  The kids are sure to enjoy Yucca chips, Yucca fries and even mashed Yucca with gravy to accompany a chicken dinner!

Your Costa Rica vacation doesn’t have to be without a sweet indulgence or two, either.  Let the kids try chewing on a piece of sugar cane for a new twist on dessert, and many varieties of sweet thick native fruit juices are readily available.

A somewhat lesser known fact that can be interesting to the grownups on vacation is that Costa Rica also produces some of the world’s most flavourful coffees.  So now that you know, you can sit back and relax after a hearty local meal with a cup of rich aromatic java!

Most important of all, be adventurous and be willing to try something new.  You may just discover a new favourite dish that you’ll continue to make even after your vacation is over!

costa-rica-luxury-family-monkeyThe beautiful tropical nation of Costa Rica has so much to offer families.  The diverse climate and vegetation provide for a variety of activities unlike any other place.  Costa Rica is also renowned for being very affordable for families as well.  There is a good selection of resorts that offer family friendly units and activities.  When you want an outing away from the resort, there are more options to choose from than one vacation can likely allow, so just for starters, here are some highlights of family tours and adventures that center around the unique wildlife of the country.

Monkeys

Costa Rica is famous for its bird-watching opportunities, but even more exciting to the younger set is the chance to see the four species of free roaming monkeys.  There are several national parks that offer monkey watching guided tours.  Your kids will delight in counting the number of spider, squirrel, white-faced and howler monkeys they can spot.  Manuel Antonio National Park is said to be the best monkey viewing area.

Frogs

If anyone in the family is interested in amphibians, they won’t be left out on your Costa Rica visit.  There are many species of frogs in the country but spotting them can be difficult.  There are national parks where they can be seen in their natural habitat but even better are the terrarium displays that are open all year. In Monteverde at the Ranario, you can observe 8 different frogs including 3 species of poison dart frogs that are best viewed behind glass.  The Amphibian Aquatic Garden frog tour is set up as a series of pools and waterways where you can observe 15 different frog species and listen to an after dark serenade!

Butterflies

Near the capital city of San Jose, there is a world famous butterfly farm that makes for a great family outing.  A two hour guided tour inside an enclosed conservatory reveals hundreds of these beautifully colored winged beauties.  They fly and float and flutter through the tropical plants and may even land on your shoulder or in your hand for a real close up look!

Turtles

If you are fortunate enough to be in Costa Rica in January, there is a good chance you will get to see the miraculous journey of baby leatherback turtles.  On a warm January evening, beaches along the Pacific coast are often swarming with these tiny creatures running like crazy on their journey to the sea.  At some of the National Parks, you can arrange to be on the beach to witness this event under the supervision of a qualified guide.
