Costa Rica can be considered the ultimate vacation country by many. It has pleasant weather all year round, various tropical places to visit, and loads of attractions and entertainment. Even the locals find it a great place to live with favorable sanitation and living conditions. But for those looking to hit the greens, are there a selection of great golf courses, too? Definitely!
There are a handful of private and public golf courses that are incorporated with Costa Rica nature, grand in scope, and are conveniently located near towns, airports, and lodging. Here are four of our favorite courses to consider for your next visit to Costa Rica.
Garra de Leon Golf Course in Guanacaste is considered an iconic and pristine course, created by none other than Robert Trent Jones II. With rolling green hills, beautifully located trees, and crystal-clear ponds, it’s the last thing one would expect in a Costa Rica golf course, but you might find it to be more challenging and enjoyable than any course you’ve been to back home. This course is situated around the Westin Playa Conchal, an exotic resort that calls for such peaceful and lush scenery. Only a couple of holes give you views of the ocean, but golfers who prefer not to golf by the ocean can certainly come here to golf an unforgettable outing.
Another great course in Guanacaste is Hacienda Pinilla. Like Garra De Leon, it’s right next door to a lavish and fun resort; this time, the JW Marriott. Created by Mike Young, this course has a ranch theme. Along with green fairways and trees, you’ll find crabgrass, cliffs, and unorthodox paths to the green, but you still get a natural-looking course with plenty of holes along the ocean. It certainly is more adventurous than your typical golf course, and avid golfers will love the challenge that it offers.
Even though this course isn’t anywhere near the Ocean, Valle del Sol in San Jose is also one of the best golf courses in Costa Rica. If you are primarily travelling to Costa Rica to see the sights in San Jose, this course isn’t far from downtown at all. The only public golf course located in Central Valley, you’ll still experience plenty of water in the form of lakes, rivers, and streams that are all connected with one another. Golfers never get tired of the sound of relaxing, flowing water here. You’ll also get plenty of tropical rainforests and three volcanoes as backdrops for beautiful views around each hole. There is a dress code for this course; men are required to wear polo shirts and women need to wear skirts. T-shirts and jeans are off limits.
Los Delfines Golf and Country Club in Playa Tambor is considered one of the most tropical courses in the country, with a wide exposure to palm trees and exotic wildlife. With all the tall trees, the course looks and feels much larger than it actually is, making the experience feel ever grander. This course is located right near Tambor Airport and overlooks the beautiful Ballena Bay. Various resorts and hotels are situated right next to this course, but if you are travelling to another area in Costa Rica, you can pay for a charter flight to take you right by this course, and it only takes up to a half hour flight time.
There are many unique courses to try in Costa Rica, so what are you waiting for? Grab your clubs, book your flight, and enjoy a couple fabulous days on Costa Rica’s links.
